Kate Donnelly: A Period of Confinement

January 24, 2014 - April 12, 2014

Kate Donnelly, recipient of the 2013 Barbara Smail Award, displayed work created during her summer residency at Burlington City Arts. Using performance, video, and sound to explore the notion of our everyday mundane actions, Donnelly examined the unremarkable, largely forgettable routines of everyday life that she referred to as periods of confinement. She envisaged these routine actions as fundamental institutions of the self and explored the ways we may be both held captive by and rescued from stagnation and apathy. Her examination and playful exploration attempted to offer us a deeper understanding of the self.
