Combat Paper featured Vermont artists and Iraq war veterans Jon Turner, Drew Cameron, Eli Wright and members of the Combat Paper Project who transformed the gallery into a functioning papermaking studio. These artists recruited veterans who cut, ground and cooked their military uniforms into pulp, and then formed them into sheets of paper. Using the transformation processes of papermaking the veterans reclaimed their uniforms as art and began to reconcile their experiences as soldiers in Iraq. Representing a new generation of interventionist artists, members of the Combat Paper Project sought to actively discourage enlistment by engaging enlistment-age high school students and community members in weekly papermaking workshops. These workshops served as a catalyst for insight and discussion, as well as psychological release.
